Hope? I sit again by my window, watching the shadows gather as the sun is setting, and I once again reflect upon those words I’ve read, and these thoughts I am having: The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid…May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony…Prepare the way of the Lord.

In early September a preacher in Florida said he had decided not to burn the Koran, This summer, the theologian, Harvey Cox, has written a book, The Future Church in which he highlights the presence of the Holy Spirit throughout our world. A group of SHCJ Associates returned from a mission to the Dominican Republic where they lived with the poor. Hope? Hope, I believe, is seen where incarnational spirituality is spoken, written and lived!

The sun outside my window has ceased to shine in my part of the world. It is indeed dark now. But! I see the moon and I am thinking of the psalm again; “In his days many righteousness flourish and peace abound, until the moon is no more.” I sit in moonglow where darkness is not really night and where hope is found in the watching and the waiting. Where the sun still rises and the moon is still the moon.

Prayer

May this world where You have made us to reside, dear God, still be our home, warmed by Your Son and sustained by Your Spirit. May the Risen Christ ever dwell among us, lest we shiver and wither away. May we be the Fire of hope we await.
