Readings for December 22, 2010 Wednesday of the fourth week of Advent

Reflection God as power


Today’s readings call to mind the image of the All-Powerful and Almighty God, the Lord who “puts to death and gives life,” who “casts down to the nether world and raises up again,” and who has “brought down rulers from their thrones.” This is a God of power, a God of action – where do we see this power and action in our own lives? Yet Advent is a time to remind us that God’s ultimate act of power was also one of love – a love so strong that he begot flesh and blood, giving us his only Son so that we may find redemption and freedom from sin.


It is easy to see this as a contradiction – a God who is compassionate and loving in one passage, but then smiting and all- powerful in the next. But this is not


contradictory, it is complimentary – not divided, but complete. Time and time again throughout the scriptures, and hopefully, throughout this Advent season, we have
