The Response-Ability community puts together a compact disc each year with our favorite reflection songs ranging from “Be Not Afraid” and “You Raise Me Up” by Josh Grobin to instrumental pieces. Many mornings, I listen to these Spirit-centered songs on my way to work and am filled with an awareness of God’s active presence in my day. Although I start out strong, it seems so easy in the course of a day to get off track via complaining about situations and people with others.
Growing up as one of eleven children, it could be challenging at times to get a word in at the dinner table so I grew accustomed to thinking before I spoke and developed a keen sense of integrity. I would always ask myself, “Would I say this if the person I am speaking about was present?” Nowadays, I need to remind myself of what comes out of my mouth. When I am cognizant of how I speak about others, I am amazed at how many opportunities I am given to make a choice between flowing with an unconstructive conversation and allowing silence or joy to speak.
Prayer Today, let us bless the Lord with our actions AND words. Like St. John of the Cross,
we are challenged to put love where we do not find it. As we welcome the Holy Child into both our conversations and times of quiet, may we recognize God among us and radiate joy.
