Readings for December 3, 2010 Friday of the first week of Advent Feast of St. Francis Xavier

Isaiah 29:17-24 Psalm 27:1, 4, 13-14 Matthew 9:27-31

Reflection “And out of gloom and darkness, the eyes of the blind shall see.”

Today’s readings are about our hope for God’s reign and the ability to see clearly. Isaiah is speaking to the Israelites about their own blindness. They are living in challenging times. They are insecure and seem to have focused on their own gains. They seemed to have forgotten that Yahweh had led them through many troubled times. They had become arrogant, exploited others and were no longer recalling what Yahweh had done for them?

I ask myself, what challenges are we as a people facing? Do we get into the blame game and avoid solutions to care for the lowly and the poor? Are there prophets that are pointing out things that I don’t want to see?

Our Gospel brings us to learning from Jesus and the two blind men. The blind men were “awake” to the coming of the messiah. They were limited with external sight but were able to hear and respond. They had hoped that Jesus, the “Son of David” would bring them the light they needed. They took the initiative to ask Jesus to open their eyes.
