Reflection In the today’s gospel, Matthew tells us how Jesus is moved by the plight and pleas
of the people throughout the countryside. He asks his apostles to travel through the lands to cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers and drive out demons, all the while telling the people that “The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.” One can only imagine what these men of simple backgrounds – fishermen, carpenters, tradesmen – must have thought when they heard this! Yet, they accepted their “vocation” and willingly obeyed.
Each one of us who is baptized in Christ is also given the same mission. We are asked to carry Christ’s words of love, hope and healing to those who are sick, rejected and suffering in mind and body. Some of us heed that call by dedicating ourselves to a specific vocation and for others, it is simply the way we live in the
world and conduct our daily lives – a kindness to a neighbor, a hug for an elderly relative, a smile to someone we pass on the street, a word of encouragement to a child. No matter which path we choose, we must dedicate ourselves to casting out the “demons” of selfishness and indifference wherever we find them.
