Reflection In today’s readings we meet the fiery, bold prophet Elijah; the solitary, unruly prophet
John the Baptist; and also Jesus who in humility orders that his identity as Son of God be kept a secret.
At the Transfiguration, we read of Peter wanting to build three tents – for the glorified Jesus, Moses and Elijah – so that they could stay in the white light of that special moment. But on leaving the mountain Jesus refers to suffering, which stands in stark contrast to His transfigured glory.
Moses, Elijah, and John: all
pointed toward the One who is to come. Today’s readings remind us that the Incarnation of God is not only a tender story of Jesus’ birth in a stable. They remind us that Jesus didn’t fit the authorities’ idea of the Promised One. Ultimately this Son’s faithful witness to His Father would lead to His suffering and death at their hands.
