Jesus engaged them on the level of their belief, not just as a miracle worker. He asked them, “do you believe that I can do this” and touched their eyes.

Today’s readings prompt me to wonder about my own blindness. Do I believe that God had shown us a way and continues to provide us light in the midst of our daily challenges? I take encouragement from the two blind men and from St Francis Xavier whose memorial we celebrate. Francis Xavier was awake to God’s light through Ignatius of Loyola and awake to a further call to share the goodness of God in parts of the world that had not heard of the good news brought by Jesus, our Emmanuel.

Prayer

O come, Emmanuel, dispel what obscures our vision. Slow us down to see what you long for us to see.

May we, enlightened like the two blind men and filled with the zeal of Francis Xavier, also be graced to help others believe that you continue to live and act among us.
