Reflection: Living Hope

I watched the sun coming, touching the shivering treetops with its promise of autumn warmth. Sitting alone by my window, I felt the reality of this approaching wonder that I am often too busy to notice. Earlier in the week I had to travel to another city, having hit the road in darkness just in time to behold the splendor of the sun rising as the shadows faded away, and I thought about hope, hope in darkness. And I

thought about Advent’s caution: wait and watch. Believe! That which is not yet seen, still is, still is coming.

Today’s readings make us pause and ponder. Yes, so much of our world is shadowed by obstacles to the coming Son: the desire for peace, the responsibility for the care of the earth, the challenge to hear the cries of extreme poverty and wars, to seek justice in society and in Church; all serving as reminders of the places where we wait for the sun to break through into our darkened and shivering earth.
