Apply yourself...

Hospitality is one industry where youth and inexperience won’t hold you back, but you need to showcase personality and natural talent too. Here’s our guide to creating a killer CV and nailing the interview

Preparing for the interview ● Put yourself in the interviewer’s shoes: if you were them, what would you want to know?

● Research your potential new employer by checking out the company website and reading news pages in trade journals such as The Caterer. Take note if it is expanding – and beware if it is getting bad press.

● Don’t panic. No matter how much you prepare, nerves can take hold, and harnessing them can work for you, not against you. Take slow, deep breaths until you feel calm.

● Ask friends and family to share their interview stories as you’ll glean some helpful dos and don’ts.

● Visualise that the interview goes well and keep those positive thoughts – they really will help you to make it a reality.

The all-important covering letter

You need to include a succinct one-page covering letter with your CV. In a nutshell, this should do the following:

● Explain which position you are applying for, including the full job title and reference number.

● Tell them why you are the best fit for the job. Briefly outline your strengths, key skills and work experience, drawn from your CV, and

focus their attention to where these match their requirements. You can also use this paragraph to show the main achievements on your CV.

● Explain why you want that particular role. Do a bit of research on the company on the internet and say what attracts you to them.

● Wind it down by saying you are looking forward to hearing from them.

Dos and don’ts of sending out your CV

Do send a CV on spec. But be targeted and sure of what role you would like to apply for. If HR receives a CV without a covering letter, they have no idea what type of role you are looking for and whether you are committed. It is then much harder to progress your application.

Don’t blanket bomb dozens of recruiters with your CV. This gives HR teams the impression that you are not passionate about working for their company.

Not many people know this… If you haven’t passed all your exams you can still include the subjects you studied,

provided you don’t

say that you passed them. And if you are fresh from school with very little experience, try listing other

achievements, such as a Saturday job, Duke of Edinburgh

award, membership of an amateur dramatics club, and so on…
