Institute of Hospitality

University leavers can draw on the experience of mentors, prepare for their first interview and access authoratative careers guidance from this 75-year-old institution

The Institute of Hospitality has been assisting managers and aspiring managers to develop professionally and stay on top of their roles in the hospitality industry for more than 75 years. Our services include an international jobs board, career and job-seeking advice, an online catalogue, a bespoke search platform, proprietary management guides, a quarterly magazine and webinars.

Need to know If you have finished college or university this year, you can take advantage of our ‘Class of 2015’ discounted membership offer, which can provide you with a one-stop-shop information service. For example, if you’ve just started

working for an in-flight caterer, but it’s a sector you haven’t studied, we’ve got a book for that. You may be interested in working on a cruise ship, but you haven’t focused on this part of the industry before – you can obtain reliable, quality information about the cruise industry from us. Or maybe you need advice on fine-tuning your CV and covering letters? Our ebooks and career-focused management guides can help. Once in work you can use our

management guides, which cover a wealth of topical operational issues. The guides are never more than four A4 sides in length, so you only take away the essentials.

Using Google to search for

hospitality-specific subjects can bring up haphazard and inferior-quality results, but the Institute of Hospitality’s bespoke search platform draws from a carefully selected portfolio containing top-quality hospitality- specific ejournals and ebooks. eJournal articles from international trade magazines can be downloaded, emailed and printed for later use.

A helping hand You can also join our Mentor Me programme and receive impartial guidance and advice from a more experienced industry leader during our six-month programme. The Mentor Me programme is informal but structured and has already given great results to aspiring managers.

Former mentee Kiril Topalski

says that being mentored helped him exceed expectations during a job interview: “I stepped back and focused on my strengths. I used the resources provided by the Institute to update my knowledge and CV. The articles and resources expanded my views and my awareness of the opportunities out there. “I was a functions supervisor with City Cruises, the operator of passenger services on the Thames, and I wanted to move on. The mentoring programme made me think about all the opportunities available to me and go for the right ones,” he adds. “My interview with the Restaurant

Group was successful. I felt very prepared. I went in for the position of assistant manager and they offered me a deputy manager position. I pointed out the value that I could bring to the role: my knowledge of wine and the industry in general.” To join the Institute of Hospitality, go to www.instituteofhospitality.org or call 020 8661 4915/4927
