The Role of the Paediatric First Aider Accident Reporting

If the child’s condition is serious you will need to call for help. Immediately dial 999/112 and ask for an ambulance. Either do this yourself if it is safe to leave the child or send a bystander.

Be sure to tell them: - how many casualties you have - what is wrong with the children - your exact location and ensure the person making the call comes back to you to let you know what the ambulance service said.

Upon arrival of the emergency services, tell them everything you know: - what happened - when it happened - and any treatment that has been administered.

Stay on the scene to answer any further questions from the emergency services including the police. After the incident, if you are at work, you will then be expected to complete an accident / incident report form.

As a workplace paediatric first aider speak to your Manager to learn what your company expects from you. But typically you will need to

record as a minimum: - The name, age and address of the child who had the accident - The name, address and occupation of the person filling in the accident book - When and where the accident happened including date and time

- How the accident happened including witness statements - What treatment was given
