Medical Emergencies 8.7 Meningitis
Meningitis can be a life threatening condition caused by viral or bacterial infections of the meninges, the protective membrane that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. These infections cause the meninges to become inflamed which can cause severe damage to the brain and poison the blood (septicaemia).
The problem with infants and young children suffering from Meningitis is that it presents itself suddenly and is often mistaken for conditions like flu as the symptoms can be similar.
Signs & Symptoms - Fever but with cold hands and feet - Child may be in pain and not wish to be touched - Child may be unwell, agitated or confused - Crying continuously - Very sleepy and difficult to wake up - Blotchy red / purple rash that does not fade when rolled over with a glass - Stiff neck - Sensitivity to light
Treatment Remember the difficulty in diagnosing Meningitis is that only some or all of these symptoms may be present and in varying degrees.
If you suspect a case of Meningitis you should take it VERY seriously and call 999/112 for an ambulance immediately.
