Unconscious Child 4.5 Seizures

Seizures can occur in young people as a result of medical conditions such as epilepsy, a head injury, an increase in body temperature, or a lack of oxygen. Typically seizures go through two clear phases known as “Tonic” and “Clonic”. These phases are followed by a period of recovery.

“Seizures can start when the child feels an ‘aura’, a taste, smell or sensation that they have recognised as a precursor to a seizure...”

Recognition

1. Tonic Phase - Child loses consciousness and falls to the ground - Rigid arching of the back and the casualty becomes stiff - Breathing becomes difficult and you may see signs of cyanosis - The phase can last as long as 30 seconds

2. Clonic Phase - Child begins to convulse / jerk violently - Possible loss of bladder or bowel control
