The Role of the Paediatric First Aider

For the avoidance of doubt when referring to people and first aid in this book we will use the following definitions:

“Infant” a baby from birth to 1 year old “Child” from 1 year to 8 years of age

Children over 8 years of age or “Puberty” are classed as adults for first aid techniques. To learn about these refer to an adult focussed first aid manual, which of course we publish as part of this series!

“The aim of a paediatric first aider is to make the child safe and comfortable, to treat any conditions they may have and of course to make sure the child doesn’t get any worse!”

2.2 Infection Control

As a paediatric first aider it is imperative that you protect yourself (and the child) from the risk of infection. Infections may come from germs or viruses contained on the skin or in body fluids, like blood and saliva.

Wearing simple equipment found in your first aid kit such as a face shield, plastic apron or disposable gloves can prove sufficient protection for you and the child.

Washing your hands properly prior to and immediately after treating a child will help reduce the risk of cross infection considerably.
