Treatment for Burns Step 1. Cool the burn down under cold running water for a minimum of 10 minutes.
Step 2. Remove any watches and jewellery before tissues begin to swell.
Step 3. To protect the burnt area from infection cover with cling film. If none is available use a non fluffy sterile dressing.
Step 4. Treat the casualty for shock (or the prevention of it).
Step 5. If appropriate call 999/112 for an ambulance.
DO NOT burst blisters DO NOT remove clothing that is stuck to the skin DO NOT apply any lotions, creams or ointments as this damages the skin and increases the risk of infection DO NOT touch the burnt area
Burns that Require Treatment in a Hospital:
- Burns to children and infants, regardless of the depth - ALL full thickness burns - ALL burns that extend around an arm or leg - ALL burns involving the face, genitals, hands or feet - ALL partial thickness burns that are larger than 1% of a casualty’s body surface - ALL superficial burns that are larger than 5% of the casualty’s body surface - Burns that have a mixed depth pattern
