Unconscious Child Head to Toe Examination

Use all your senses to Look, Listen and Feel your way down the child’s body, without any unnecessary movement of the child. Ideally this procedure should be done in front of a witness.

Head and Neck Step 1. Check that breathing and pulse rate are normal.

Step 2. Run your hands across the head and around the back of the neck checking for fluid, lumps, bumps, irregularity or deformity – check your hands. Step 3. Next, look in the ears for fluid and talk to the child, looking for a response.

Step 4. Look in both eyes, compare and contrast pupil size, look for discolouration or foreign objects.

Step 5. Assess the skin. Is it normal in colour? Pale or flushed? Cold or hot? Wet or dry? The skin will tell you if there is something wrong.

Chest

Step 1. Run your hands across the shoulders and collar bones, compare and contrast. Loosen any clothing around the neck area to aid breathing and circulation.

Step 2. Can the child breathe easily? Feel both sides of the chest, looking for equal pain free movement from the child.
