Medical Emergencies Hypoglycaemia


This condition is caused by high levels of insulin and low levels of sugar.


Recognition - Pale, cold and clammy skin - Normal breathing - Rapid pulse


- Normal smelling breath - Child may suffer from confusion and a change in behaviour (similar to drunkenness) - Child will deteriorate rapidly if treatment not received


Treatment


- Sit the child down - Give them a sugary drink, sugar or sugary food - Allow the child to take their own glucose if they have it - Child will respond quickly to the sugar, if they do not call 999/112 - Be prepared for your child to go unconscious (place in the recovery position) - Monitor airway and breathing
