Managing an Emergency Primary Survey


By starting our assessment and treatment of a child with the primary survey we are ensuring that we find and deal with the most life threatening conditions first and are not distracted by any non life threatening conditions. Remember the acronym DRABC to help you to perform the primary survey.


The Primary Survey D R A B C


DANGER Check the area is safe. If it is safe to do so, remove any hazards


RESPONSE Check to ensure the child is conscious by asking them “Are you alright?”


AIRWAY If there is no response, open the airway using the “Head tilt / Chin lift” method


BREATHING


If the child IS breathing normally – place in the Recovery Position


If the child is NOT breathing normally – send for an ambulance, ask for an


AED and begin CPR CIRCULATION


Check for signs of bleeding and if found control the bleeding 9
