Wounds & Bleeding 6.6 Eye Injuries


Eye wounds are a concern for a first aider because the risk to a child’s vision is serious. Never attempt to touch or remove anything embedded in the eyeball. Treatment


Small particles may be washed away using a sterile eye wash or clean running water but you may not be able to see any scratches or damage done to the eye as a result of the injury.


To protect the child’s eye on route to hospital, cover with a sterile dressing, and secure into position. Then ask the child to rest their good eye to prevent movement of the injured eye.


You will need to reassure the child throughout this treatment.
