4. Unconscious Child 4.1 Secondary Survey


Once you have performed a successful Primary Survey and are happy that the child is breathing normally and not suffering from any major blood loss, you can begin to perform a Secondary Survey. During this methodical survey you are looking for other non life threatening injuries or illnesses. This is often referred to as the “head to toe” or “top to toe” survey.

What happened? This will establish the HISTORY of the event leading up to the illness or injury.


What can I see? This will give you vital SIGNS of any injuries. (Bruising, swelling deformity, etc).


Listen to what the child is telling you. These are the SYMPTOMS of the injury or illness the child is suffering from. (Location and type of pain, nausea, feeling hot or cold, etc).
