Bone, Muscle & Joint Injuries Head Injuries

Head injuries are a concern for first aiders as they are potentially very serious and could lead to your child becoming unconscious. In this section we are going to cover three different head injuries you may come across, a skull fracture, compression and concussion.

Skull Fracture

The skull protects the brain and the brain is attached to the spinal cord.

As a result, any injury to the skull can affect our central nervous system (CNS).

The job of the CNS is to control important body functions like breathing, body temperature and circulation, so any damage caused by an injury to the head can affect these vital functions.

Recognition - A wound to the skull - Impaired level of consciousness / responsiveness

- Blood or clear fluid leaking from the ears and / or nose - Headache - Confusion or strange behaviour

Treatment - Treat any wounds / bleeding or fluid loss as you find them - Sit the child in a comfortable position - If there is swelling use a cold compress - Monitor child for signs of deterioration

- Call 999/112 and ask for an ambulance - Be prepared to place the child in the recovery position or resuscitate
