Bone, Muscle & Joint Injuries 7.5 Dislocations

A dislocation occurs when two halves of a joint are separated. Dislocations are incredibly painful as the bone is pulled out of its normal position. Joints can be found in the knee, fingers, vertebrae, shoulder and jaw. (Recognition and treatment are as per broken bones). No attempt should be made by a first aider to “pop” the joint back into position!

7.6 Sprains & Strains

Sprains and strains are injuries to the soft tissues. A sprain is a tear of the ligaments around a joint whilst a strain is a tear of the muscles and tendons.

Recognition - Pain / tenderness - Swelling - Inflammation - Inability to move the affected area

Treatment Sprains and strains are treated in the same way by using the “RICE” method. The aim of this treatment is to reduce swelling and the associated pain as quickly as possible. If you are in any doubt as to the severity of the injury, treat as a fracture and arrange for transportation to a hospital.
