Poisoning Inhaled Poisons


Recognition – Difficulty breathing, dizziness, hypoxia, impaired level of consciousness


Causes – Smoke, toxic fumes from chemicals, and drugs Treatment – Move the child into fresh air if it is safe to do so and call 999/112 for an ambulance. Be prepared to resuscitate


Injected Poisons


Recognition – Localised pain, swelling and redness around the area of the injection, possible anaphylactic reaction, nausea and vomiting, difficulty in breathing, an impaired level of consciousness Causes – Bites and stings from animals, drugs Treatment – For bites and stings, if possible, remove the sting by scraping off; do not use tweezers to squeeze the sting as this may add additional poison. If the sting cannot be removed seek medical attention and monitor for signs of anaphylactic shock


Absorbed Poisons


Recognition – Localised pain, swelling and redness. Rash and itching may develop Causes – Household chemicals, Industrial chemicals, plant poisons Treatment – Wash the area for 20 minutes if it is a chemical burn / poison and call 999/112 for an ambulance Be prepared to resuscitate
