Wounds & Bleeding 6.3 Controlling Bleeding

Treatment As a first aider it is a priority to reduce blood loss, minimise infection, prevent and treat for shock.

This can be done in four simple steps:

Step 1. Apply direct pressure to the wound. Ask the child to do it themself until you can apply a clean, non fluffy sterile dressing. If there is an embedded object apply pressure either side of the object.

Step 2. Elevate the wound above the child’s heart to help reduce blood loss and support in a comfortable position for the child.

Step 3. Depending on the location of the wound, sit or lay the child down. If the bleeding is severe, treat for the prevention of shock by laying the child down and elevating the legs. Keep the child warm.

Step 4. If bleeding continues through the first dressing, apply another one. If bleeding continues remove both and start again. Ensuring direct pressure is being applied directly over the wound.
