Turning lost bags into a fun game

Gamers and frustrated travellers alike can now access a new mobile game which takes a swipe at greedy low-cost airlines and their confusing luggage policies, high excess baggage fees and hand luggage. Available in iTunes and Android app stores, as well as on Facebook, Mickey O'Greedy's Luggage Swindle is a tongue-in-cheek game developed by SendMyBag. It provides a fun way for travellers to air their frustrations at these airlines' antics.

With the playability and addictive lure of Pac-man, Mickey O'Greedy's Luggage Swindle allows players to play as Mickey, using a greedy grab hand to catch travellers with luggage, each time bagging 'cash' in the game. High scores can lead to discount vouchers on baggage shipping with SendMyBag and a passport-style leaderboard means fans can interact with each other and play competitively. SendMyBag founder Adam Ewart said: "We wanted to develop a fun game that could be played by travellers of all ages, whilst they're sat in the airport or on their travels. It can also be played simply by those who want to know what it's like to be the one handing out the charges! The leaderboard offers the competition element, meaning it can be shared among friends and family. We're really pleased at how it's developed and we hope that Mickey O'Greedy is a character that the whole travelling nation will love." sendmybag.com

Finnair trials Windows 8 tablets

Finnair is running a two-month trial of Windows 8-powered HP ElitePad 900 tablets and wireless internet service on one of its Airbus A330 wide body aircraft. The plane, with the registration OH-LTT, is being used on both scheduled and charter flights. Peter Gabrielsson, vp customer experience, Finnair said: "We want to test the functionality of the wireless network on intercontinental flights as well as learn how passengers use the equipment during the flight. We are interested to know how the use is divided between the fixed inflight entertainment system and the tablet. “Windows 8, with its revolutionary touch- optimised user interface and rapid application development, allowed Microsoft to quickly develop a visually stunning entertainment system and deliver a first-class experience to our passengers”, added Riitta Eiskonen, Microsoft Finland.

“The HP ElitePad is a powerful and stylish business tablet for an optimal in-flight customer experience. HP provides Finnair an enterprise-grade tablet that combines style and user experience with the features IT requires,” said Ari Koskinen, director and gm, printing and personal systems, HP Finland. The test is taking place in Business on scheduled flights and in Comfort on charter flights. Passengers are offered a tablet which includes movies, TV shows, music and games. Additionally, the tablet includes wellness- related programmes. Passengers will be asked to participate in a survey to gather feedback. finnair.com

Gate Gourmet takes on Meiko’s M-iQ

MEIKO and Gate Gourmet have signed a contract which will see the air catering giant use MEIKO’s M-iQ series of dishwashers on a global scale.

The M-iQ makes do with far less water than previous dishwasher models, meaning fewer chemicals and a more environmental process. Another cutting-edge feature of the machine is that MEIKO's GiO reverse osmosis (RO) technology (usually available as an optional extra), is fully contained within the M-iQ. The GiO feature removes all the minerals from the water, including bacteria and viruses, to produce ultra-clean water for rinsing. MEIKO managing director, Dr. Stefan Scheringer, said: “M-iQ has broken the mould by showing you can achieve exciting and innovative results such as reducing operating costs by 30 per cent, eliminating the need for a direct exhaust air connection, and boosting flexibility through modular design – all without sacrificing quality.”

Dr. Scheringer also pointed out: “The development of these machines has given a whole new dimension to the concept of sustainability. Specifically, it means that anyone who uses an M-iQ dishwasher can be confident that it will only consume the energy it really needs to do the job without any unnecessary waste of resources.

The M-iQ range of commercial dishwashers received the Environmental Technology Prize from the German federal state of Baden- Württemberg in the category of ‘Technology To Reduce, Treat and Separate-Out Emissions’. meiko.info
