AIX REVIEW LUFTHANSA ENTERTAINS THE SHORT HAUL Norwegian adds Row 44 services
Row 44 has completed installation of its satellite- based inflight wifi and device- based entertainment on 60 of Norwegian Air Shuttle’s Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
The installation makes Norwegian the first airline in Europe to offer high-speed connectivity and live TV. It is also the first European carrier to roll- out video-on-demand services directly to passengers’ own wifi- enabled devices.
Lufthansa Systems is preparing to roll out inflight, device-based entertainment with a range of short and medium haul carriers. The BroadConnect technology, already extensively trialed on Lufthansa’s A320s, Qantas’ 767s and Virgin Australia’s 737s, allows passengers who download a simple app to view movies and a range of other entertainment on their own technology hardware during flights.
Norbert Muller, senior vp BroadConnect, said: “We are bringing IFE into the short and medium haul cabin and expect to announce several new airline
partners in the coming months. We have overcome the problems of Hollywood rights and are now able to meet the challenge presented by the wide range of platforms passengers use.” He said trials of the system had shown that simultaneous wireless streams could be successfully made to an entire cabin of 250 passengers plus, and that cabin and maintenance crews had found the system simple to use and maintain.
