Finnair partners with Marimekko

The design collaboration between Finnair and Marimekko enters a new phase as Finnair brings textiles and tableware designed by the iconic Finnish design and fashion house to its aircraft starting May 15. As an emblem of the cooperation, a Finnair Airbus 330 is now flying with a blue- forest livery based on the Marimekko print Metsänväki ('forest dwellers'). The plane will fly from Finnair’s Helsinki hub to the airline’s 13 Asian destinations plus New York, joining a sister aircraft painted in Marimekko’s Unikko ('poppy') print since last October. As part of the collaboration, a selection of Marimekko for Finnair items is also available for purchase, both through inflight sales and the Finnair PlusShop.

”With our Marimekko cooperation, we want to bring timeless yet modern Finnish design to the travel experience of Finnair customers,” says Anssi Komulainen, senior vp, customer service. ”Our Business customers now enjoy their inflight meals from tableware tailor-made for Finnair by Marimekko, and Marimekko napkins, blankets, pillows and head rest covers will be introduced during summer. The same classic prints are featured on Economy paper cups, headrest covers, fleece blankets and pillows.” The Marimekko for Finnair collection was designed according to the airline’s needs by Marimekko designer Sami Ruotsalainen in collaboration with Kristina and Emma Isola, in original Marimekko patterns by Maija Isola. finnair.com

AMENITY KITS

Wessco and US Airways deal goes up in lights

US Airways has had its name in lights on the prestigious hoardings of Times Square, Broadway, in New York.

The airline announced to the world and to New Yorkers, in particular, that it has refreshed its Envoy amenity kit, featuring Red Flower products, supplied by WESSCO International.

The new Envoy Class amenity kit features the natural and hydrating Red Flower skin care products from a small and cutting-edge boutique New York company. As part of the media campaign to promote its services, US Airways featured the kit in a huge Times Square electronic billboard earlier this year. It was a first in the industry of amenity kit launches, and was met with a huge response.

The natural and reusable dopp-style kit also features other amenity items, such as travel socks and eyeshades for passenger comfort on long haul flights.

US Airways has also introduced its new pre- order gourmet food programme. Passengers can now pre-order food normally only found in upper class cabins for a small charge. These US Airways upgrades are part of the airlines' new growth strategy. wessco.net

Vivienne Westwood style for Virgin

Virgin Atlantic is partnering with leading British designer Vivienne Westwood to redesign its iconic red uniform. The collaboration between the two British brands is a long-term partnership which will see a total re-design of the uniform across all areas. With original design and sustainability being vital factors to both Richard Branson and Vivienne Westwood, this project aims to bring these ideals together in an exciting and innovative collaboration.

For the new uniforms, Vivienne Westwood wanted to create a futuristic look which references her enduring interest in 40s French couture cutting techniques as well as the Savile Row tailoring heritage. The new designs will capture the glamour and style that the Virgin Atlantic cabin crew are renowned for. Richard Branson, president of Virgin Atlantic commented: “Virgin Atlantic has a distinct spirit and from a design perspective we continually try to challenge the norm and stand out from the crowd. Our current uniform has been around for more than 10 years and we have seen other airlines start to copy it. When we were choosing the designer for this project, we wanted to work with a group of people who share our spirit of adventure, who believe in challenging the status quo and creating something truly memorable.”

Passengers will receive a sneak peek of the new uniforms from July when crew will trial the uniform. Crew will provide feedback on the design, practicality and wearability so tweaks can be made ahead of the full launch in 2014. flyvirgin.com
