While going out for dinner is apparently off the agenda for the cash-strapped, the trend for locally- produced cup cakes and trips out for tea are burgeoning, spawning a raft of new businesses and giving a welcome boost to those already established in the UK. It might be asking a lot of the humble English scone and Victoria sandwich to lift a nation out of the financial doldrums but it is certainly true that a passion for the simple things in life, for the familiar and the home-grown does seem to be have been rekindled in recent times. And it is a trend reflected onboard too, with a growing number of cruise

recent business survey in the UK suggested that the British love of


lines, rail operators and airlines, flying the flag by buying the best of British. Virgin Atlantic has been serving


afternoon tea, complete with English scone, jam and cream, for a while now, initially launched using scones from UK specialist Haywood & Padget. The company began as a one-man home-baker selling scones from a market stall, and is now the biggest producer of scones in the world producing 50,000 scones an hour. It supplies LSG Sky Chefs and Thomson Airways as well the UK’s major supermarkets, and exports scones (frozen) as far afield as Australia and Japan. They come in plain, sultana, cherry and cheese flavours and are pre-packed in afternoon tea boxes containing jam and clotted cream. This success and the growing passion in the UK for cupcakes has inspired Virgin to enlist supplies from

family-run cupcake business, Raise. A mother, father and son outfit,


Raise has signed a contract which increases its turnover by 250 per cent. Virgin is offering the cakes as part of its Economy and Premium Economy afternoon tea service on 15 flights from Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Glasgow. Raise md, Jeremy Jacobs, said: “We
