Cabin crew training for Virgin Australia
Over the past few years, Virgin Australia (VA) has transformed its product in the air including the introduction of Business for the first time in a decade. To ensure a consistent inflight dining experience in Business, VA has recently started crew training sessions hosted by acclaimed chef, Luke Mangan. Crew have the opportunity to learn the flavours and thought process behind each dish, along with a range of preparation skills such as the best way to match wines and present dishes. A recent session was held at Luke Mangan’s new test kitchen in Dank Street where gm, Narelle Kellahan announced: “We’re going to be using the test kitchen at Dank Street as an opportunity to test out new recipes and food concepts for the airline. We’re having an aircraft oven installed, so that we can make sure the testing is as accurate as possible, even chocking the oven so that it’s on the same slope as an aircraft on take-off – to give a very accurate view of what happens to the food through its journey to the guests table!"

AeroMobile goes for critical mass
AeroMobile’s new ceo Kevin Rogers has predicted significant growth in onboard phone usage as passengers become increasingly aware of the availability of inflight connectivity and pricing policies. The AeroMobile product is branded as eXPhone by its part-owner Panasonic, and is sold as part of Panasonic’s Ku-band satellite- powered Global Communications Suite. Installation on Virgin Atlantic has triggered “an amazing growth” trend, he said with an average 30 users per flight.
Fears that phone usage onboard would be annoying and distruptive have so far proved unfounded with only 30% of usage involving voice calls and the majority 70% being text and data use. Pricing issues are also becoming less of a barrier to usage. "Date roaming prices are dropping and we are part of that - our business is growing in line with terrestrial growth".
