Panasonic’s Tweetathon
Panasonic Avionics has achieved an historic social media milestone by connecting passengers flying over five continents via Twitter in the first ever global inflight Tweetathon.
The conversation, hashtagged #High5Live took place as passengers on five aircraft flying over five continents charted their journeys and interacted with earthbound Twitter users 35,000 feet below.
Virgin Atlantic has
announced that passengers will be able to turn on their inflight entertainment systems prior to take-off and will be able to leave it on during landing from now onwards.
This new service, which is available on Virgin Atlantic’s video-on-demand inflight entertainment system, will offer passengers access to an additional two hours of entertainment per flight.
Up until recently inflight entertainment systems on board Virgin Atlantic aircraft were turned on 25 minutes after taking off and had to be switched off 40 minutes before landing, but this new service allows passengers to watch movies once the safety demonstration is completed and right through to landing. Qatar extends OnAir
Qatar Airways is fitting its A350 and A380 fleets with Mobile OnAir and Internet OnAir. The airline has been operating OnAir’s GSM on its A320s for over three years and in total over 150 Qatar Airways’ aircraft will now have OnAir connectivity, including its Boeing 787s. The system means that passengers have the choice of using either the GSM network or wifi. They can use their mobile phones and tablets for calls,

During taxi, take-off and landing, only headsets provided by Virgin Atlantic can be worn, in case announcements are being made, but once in the air, passengers are able to use their own headsets.

Passengers used Twitter to compare inflight menus, share the results of live sports matches, plan itineraries and compete for the most Twitter mentions, using mobiles and tablets to access high-speed wireless broadband available via Panasonic’s eXConnect technology. flights to and from Europe, as well as on regional flights. The pattern emerging is that business travellers typically use mobile data, for example for email and reading the news. Leisure passengers are more likely to send text messages or update Twitter and Facebook accounts.” The award-winning airline currently has orders for 13 Airbus A380s, including options, with deliveries starting in 2014. The airline also has orders for some 80 A350s.
