We’ve always had a soft spot for commercial vehicles. Yes, they are big. And yes, they aren’t for everyone, but the Volkswagen Transporter Kombi T32 SWB Highline 2.0 TDI made for a lovely week-long test.
Generous in space, the Kombi can take a payload of 1663kg and has plenty of room for one or more pallets which is good going by any tradesman’s standard and the adaptive cruise control setting makes long journeys much more tolerable. It’s ideal for motorway trips, as the cruise control system keeps your speed at a steady pace - giving you one less thing to worry about. In city environments, the emergency braking system adds an extra layer of protection, sensing when an object gets too close then braking automatically.
Speaking of which, we were particularly impressed with the front and rear parking sensors. Navigating tight city streets is never easy in a
van but hearing a welcome bleep made all the difference, preventing near misses before they even arose. It’s comfortable to drive too. Load sensitive shock absorbers in the suspension make the ride reasonably soft, and the manually adjustable lumbar support mechanism helps keep your posture aligned.
Overall - a solid all-round commercial vehicle. It’s a great size, with plenty of space for all load types but it still feels compact enough to minimise undue bumps and scrapes. If you’re in the market for a van, then Volkswagen’s flagship offering will have you covered on all fronts. The Transporter gets our Car Test stamp of approval. Up next: the Volkswagen Caravelle. After spending a week with VW’s leading utility vehicle, we came to the conclusion that it’s a great all- rounder. Not only will it fit seven people with luggage comfortably but it’s also supremely comfortable to drive too, particularly on longer journeys.
We’ve all been there - cramped in the back, no space to stretch your arms or legs, bags stuck between your feet. With the Caravelle, you won’t have to worry about such a situation again. The interior space is large enough for a plethora of uses that would otherwise be too demanding for most vehicles.
It strikes a fine balance between everyday practicality and much-needed passenger comfort too. The on-board infotainment system features all the mod cons that make driving extra pleasurable, whilst the sliding doors add

a welcome touch of luxury for passengers in the back. The ride comfort is excellent, which is especially important given that it’s an MPV. For long distance travelling, it’s hard to think of another utility vehicle that comes close. Early morning airport transfers and late-night taxiing are the kind of situations where the Caravelle would really come into its own.
For business or private use, we’d go as far as to say that few MPV’s can match the Caravelle in terms of practicality, reliability and safety. It’s supremely ergonomic in all departments, making it our go-to utility vehicle to recommend here at Car Test.
