The North East North Tyneside Leading the Way

This is the next step in a strategy to bring the Swans Energy Park back into economic use and is part of a wider long-term plan by the authority to build on the success and develop the North Bank of the River Tyne. Working with both private and public sector partners, the area will be developed as a world class destination for offshore and advanced manufacturing.

Elected Mayor of North Tyneside Norma Redfearn CBE said: “The River Tyne has a world-famous heritage of manufacturing, ship building and mining and we’re committed to making it a great place to work again.

“We have ambitious plans to work with our fantastic local businesses to create new jobs and apprenticeships on the river, which will complement all the other great things happening throughout the borough.”

North Tyneside Council is leading the borough’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic with a series of ambitious plans.

The Ambition for North Tyneside strategy focuses on the needs of every part of the borough and sets out how the council hopes to help shape North Tyneside and make sure it is well placed to meet the challenges ahead.

One of the key components of this is the ‘Ambition for North Shields and the Fish Quay’ master plan which seeks to transform the town centre and riverside into a destination where people choose to live, work and spend their leisure time.

It outlines eight separate projects which include enhancing the appearance of key areas, creating a new transport hub and town square, improved walking and cycling routes, a new cultural quarter and a riverside walkway linking the town centre and Fish Quay. There are also proposals for high-quality housing at key locations and relocating the ferry landing to Western Quay.

Work is now starting to get underway on the ground and is set to continue over the coming years.

Cllr Carl Johnson, Deputy Mayor of North Tyneside, said: “This is a great opportunity for North Shields as we recover from the pandemic.

“We have seen a return to shopping local over the past year or so, so the time is right for public sector investment and for residents to continue to support local shops and services.”

North Shields master plan

Meanwhile, work has recently been completed to refurbish the upper floors of the Swans Centre for Innovation (CFI), a specialist business centre located at the historic former Swan Hunter shipyard site in Wallsend.

The work, which was carried out by contractor Surgo Construction, has provided an additional 940 square metres of refurbished office and meeting room accommodation, creating flexible space for up to 10 businesses, a new car park and reconfiguration of the reception area. A balcony space has also been created providing spectacular views across the River Tyne.

It comes after the council announced an exciting future for the former Swan Hunter site. Following a marketing exercise, the site was sold to Shepherd Offshore Limited in December 2020. The site has the potential to make a significant contribution to the local and wider economy and Shepherd Offshore Ltd, are currently refining their proposals for the facility which will see the creation of 500 plus jobs in the longer term.

North Tyneside Council continues to work with businesses to help them relocate to the borough and enjoy all it has to offer – brilliant business parks, stunning natural scenery and a skilled workforce.

Europe’s largest domestic alarm provider Verisure relocated to the Quorum Park in 2020 and has gone from strength-to-strength - trebling its first-year hire target, with the recruitment of close to 300 staff.

North Tyneside is also set to welcome technology giant Sage, which will be moving its international head office to Cobalt Park where it will occupy the Zeta building, the flagship site on the business park, as well the former Utilitywise offices – a total of 200,000 square feet of space to accommodate up to 2,000 staff.
