Waterside The £250m Leicester Waterside regeneration project has transformed 150 acres of largely run-down former industrial land in the heart of Leicester, creating a vibrant and thriving neighbourhood with new homes and new workspaces.
Development has included new hotels, such as Novotel and Adagio aparthotel, new homes, residential student schemes, offices, shared workspaces and the transformation of the semi-derelict Leicester Central Station.
The LLEP has invested £20m towards the scheme that will see over 5,500 m² new commercial workspace and create 455 new jobs.
The Gresham
A £17m redevelopment of the former Fenwick department store in Leicester is supported with £4m from the LLEP’s Growing Places Fund. The renovation and conversion of the 1880’s building will transform it into a 133-bed aparthotel, more than 1,100m² of co-working business space with associated facilities and four new dynamic commercial units. It opens Autumn 2021.
A512 and M1 J23 improvements
Our investment in infrastructure includes M1 junction 23 improvements to support future development, traffic growth and to unlock 4,000 homes between Loughborough and Shepshed.
The scheme is part funded with £12m from the LLEP’s Local Growth Fund and an additional £1.8m from the Getting Building Fund to accelerate completion. It supports access to LUSEP, a dynamic innovation community with serviced development land opportunities, aiding delivery at the science park and benefitting the wider economy.
Low Carbon Initiatives
Our region has announced a climate emergency so the LLEP is developing a comprehensive roadmap leading to a zero-carbon economy. It includes investment opportunities and an audit of the jobs and skills we will need to create. The LLEP is the first Local Enterprise Partnership in the country to achieve a bronze level Carbon Literacy Award from The Carbon Literacy Project.
Waterside - Great Central Square Leicester St Margaret’s Gateway
We’ve invested £10.5m Getting Building Fund in St Margaret’s Gateway – believed to be the first bus station built to net zero standards in the UK. The city centre bus station will be powered by 750m² of photovoltaic panels, feeding surplus energy back to the grid and supplying electric bus charging points.
East Midlands Freeport
Creating an estimated 60,000 new skilled jobs for the East Midlands, the site is a unique inland freeport centred around East Midlands Airport and Gateway Industrial Cluster (EMAGIC) in North West Leicestershire, Uniper’s Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station site in Rushcliffe in Nottinghamshire and the East Midlands Intermodal Park (EMIP) in South Derbyshire.
The Midlands exports more than any other region in England after the North East. The Freeport will help rebuild the region’s economy and bring significant investment to develop and drive innovation, alternative energy sources and green technology with plans for Ratcliffe power station to become a zero-carbon technology and energy hub.
This positive activity is reflected in the first set of results from the LLEP’s new business tracker survey, that will follow 200 businesses over the coming year and gather their views on a wide range of issues that affect them. It’s inspiring to see that 78% of businesses feel optimistic for the future and this gives us a great starting point for the road to recovery for our city and county.
