Car Test Škoda Superb Estate iV SE L
Regulars of Car Test will know we’re big fans of hybrid-electric cars. We’ve said it many times before but that’s because they’re worth shouting about. Quiet on the road, light on the pocket and better for the environment - three traits that made testing the ŠKODA’s Superb Estate iV SE L a no-brainer.
If you’re looking for an everyday family car that’s both reliable, safe and hard-wearing, then the Superb Estate iV SE L should be high up your list. The estate layout means there’s more than enough room for a young family, shopping and suitcases - we managed to fit several of the latter in with plenty of space remaining - whilst the automatic braking function adds an extra layer of protection when driving through city streets.
It’s also a hybrid, so if you’re looking to reduce your carbon footprint then the Superb certainly gets you on your way to doing so. We stuck with the 85kW electric motor for most of the week - making sure to give it a full charge before leaving the house - but flicked back into petrol mode on longer journeys to make each source of fuel go further.
The Superb is supremely safe too. Lane assist and blind spot detection act as a second pair of eyes on motorways and when you’re driving in the city, the rear-view parking camera proves immeasurably useful. In summary - a great value estate that’s perfect for any size family with entry level prices from just £24,500.
Škoda Fabia Hatch Monte Carlo 1.0 TSI 95 PS
Rounding off our double-page ŠKODA feature is the Fabia Hatch Monte Carlo. We spent a week with this spacious five-seater and it left us mightily impressed.
We loved the sizable boot space. It’s a feature that can be hard to come by in hatchbacks but not in the Fabia’s case, making it perfect for everyday essential trips. Rear parking sensors help reduce the risk of bumps and scrapes when navigating city streets - great for those who aren’t so confident when it comes to parking - whilst the Stop/Start system means no engine idling. This was a feature we were particularly impressed with (given that we were stuck in traffic jams on more than one occasion).
COMMERCIAL PROPERTY MONTHLY 2021
The Fabia took to suburban roads like a duck to water. The ride was exceptionally comfortable in both the front and back - aided by the Monte Carlo leather bolstered seats - which made for a pleasant driving experience on every occasion. It packs a punch under the bonnet too, with a 1 litre TSI engine, so there’s plenty of available oomph should you want it.
Conclusion: a great hot hatch back for the price. Coming in at just under £18,000, the Fabia is perfect for both first-time and family drivers. Spacious, practical and well-built for urban living, the Monte Carlo additions make for a worthy upgrade, especially if you’re looking to add a touch of flair to your regular driving experience.
