Forge Island cinema and leisure development
Work is underway to revitalise Rotherham town centre, with a large focus on leisure and entertainment along with new housing developments and improved open spaces.
This new lease of life has already begun with a number of major projects having been completed, including the borough’s first University Centre, and a £12m upgrade and refurbishment of the Transport Interchange.
After more than 30 years, the silver screen is returning to Rotherham. The Arc Cinema has exchanged a long-term lease with national urban regenerator, Muse Developments, to become the leisure anchor at Forge Island. The boutique cinema operator will provide an 8-screen state-of-the-art VIP experience with construction starting in 2022.
Plans are also in place for food and drink outlets to complement the development and discussions are advancing with a major hotel operator. The leisure facilities will be set within an attractive public square with a new pedestrian bridge connecting the scheme to the wider town centre, creating an exciting mixed-use destination.
A high-quality landscaped setting has already been created adjacent to the canal connected to the main Forge Island development.
Work to improve the open spaces throughout the town centre is also taking place with new paving, lighting and seating to give a brighter, modern feel.

All of this will be more accessible than ever with improved cycle lanes, canal side walking routes and enhanced road infrastructure.

Meanwhile a pocket park is being created on High Street to provide a high-quality public space.
Ambitious plans are in progress for the redevelopment and repurposing of the markets complex. The proposals include a relocated central library, new community hub, extensive public realm and improved links to the town centre and college.
Over 170 new homes are currently being built on three town centre sites in prime locations and will include a mixture of council homes for rent, shared ownership, and private properties for sale.
