Michael Schuster is a wine writer and independent lecturer who ran his own wine school in London for many years; he provided courses and tastings for anyone from absolute beginners to budding Masters of Wine. He lived
and worked in Bordeaux for two years, holds the Tasting diploma from Bordeaux University, and translated Emile Peynaud’s Le Goût du Vin into English. Among his own books is Essential Winetasting, which won the trio of André Simon, Glenfiddich, and Lanson awards in 2001 and was republished in a revised edition in 2017. As a respite from matters vinous, he enjoys gardening, music, and entertaining with his wife.
Dr Erik Skovenborg is a Danish specialist in family medicine who has developed a deep interest in the health implications of drinking, allowing him to become a member of the Social, Scientific, and Medical Council of AIM (Alcohol in Moderation) in 1992, a founder member of the Scandinavian Medical Alcohol Board in 1994, and a member of the International Scientific Forum on Alcohol Research in 2010. For many years, Erik has lectured extensively on alcohol and health to medical professionals, as well as to the general public. His published work includes In Vino Sanitas (1990), Wine and Health: Myths and Facts (2000), Women and Wine: From Useful Facts to Healthy Enjoyment (2014), and A Toast to Old Age: A Happy Life as a Senior with Beer and Wine (2017).
Brian St Pierre has been a freelance writer most of his life; he is the author of 12 books and an editor or contributor to 12 more, mostly on food and wine. He worked at the Wine Institute in San Francisco for several years and founded its international-relations department before lapsing back into writing. He’s written for The New York Times, Sunday Telegraph, and San Francisco Chronicle, as well as many magazines, including Decanter, where he was a contributing editor for nearly 30 years. He now lives in rural Scotland, where he raises potatoes and leeks, and barters vichyssoise for eggs and hogget. His progress on another book varies between dilatory and desultory, while he daydreams about the 1959 La Tâche that led him, happily, astray.
Tom Stevenson has been writing about wine for more than 45 years. He is the author of 23 books and the winner of 32 literary awards, including The Wine Literary Award, America’s only lifetime-achievement award for wine writers. In 1998, his Christie’s World Encyclopedia of Champagne & Sparkling Wine (currently in its fourth edition, with Essi Avellan MW) made history by being the only wine book to warrant a leader in a national newspaper (The Guardian) when it proved that the English used a second fermentation to convert still wine into sparkling six years before Dom Pérignon set foot in the Abbey of Hautvillers. Tom also conceived Wine Report and, in 2014, created the Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships, where he is chairman and one of the three judges.

Stuart Walton has been writing on wine and food, as well as aspects of cultural history, since 1991, having been the wine writer at The Observer, The European, BBC magazines, and Food and Travel. His World Encyclopedia
of Wine was fully revised in 2018, and he is also the author of You Heard It Through the Grapevine (2001), Out of It: A Cultural History of Intoxication (2001), and Humanity: An Emotional History (2004). His latest theoretical work is In the Realm of the Senses: A Materialist Theory of Seeing and Feeling (2016), and he published his first novel, The First Day in Paradise, in 2016. Stuart has also been a senior contributing writer on Britain’s Good Food Guide since 1994 and is a former chairman of the Circle of Wine Writers.
Paul White is an author and wine judge who has judged at more than 60 international wine competitions and visited as many wine regions on six continents. Paul’s website,
winedisclosures.com, focuses mostly on Portugal, as well as
endangered grape varieties and terra-cotta winemaking. His latest book is Talha Tales: Portugal's Ancient Answer to Amphora Wines.
David Williams graduated with a degree in philosophy from Sussex University, then spent a couple of years wandering the world as a freelance journalist, writing about music and culture for magazines including
The Face and Arena. On returning to England, he wangled a job at the British wine-trade magazine Harpers. His years there saw him visiting and writing about the world’s major wine regions, before moving on to become editor of Wine & Spirit. A former member of The Wine Gang, he now combines his deputy editorship of The World of Fine Wine and management of its website with his role as wine correspondent of The Observer newspaper. He also writes about wine and the wine industry for a variety of other publications.
Jon Wyand is a photographer who has been specializing in wine for more than 30 years. Although best known for his photographs of Burgundy, he has expanded into most of the major wine regions. His work appears frequently
in The World of Fine Wine, where he also writes the regular “Burgundy Portrait” feature, and he brought to life the profiles in the Finest Wines series. His most recent books of photography are Une Année en Corton: Rencontres en Haut Lieu and 4 Saisons en Côte Chalonnaise: Au Hasard des Rencontres. Jon has won the Louis Roederer Artistry of Wine award four times and has been Errázuriz Wine Photographer of the Year twice.
