THE END OF THE STORAGE INDUSTRY?

oieabs is a nonprofit technology research centre a oint effort between fie of the biggest studios: Paramount, Sony, Universal, Disney and Warner Bros. In 2019 it published a manifesto called The Evolution of Media Creation, setting out its 10-year vision for the future of production and post.
This sets out 10 principles for the way in which the industry will eole. he ery first of those principles states that “all assets are created or ingested straight into the cloud, and do not need to be moved”. The second is that “applications come to the media”. In simple terms, all media for top-end productions will be stored and processed on third-party hardware.
The advantages of the cloud, such as
direct correlation between activity and cost, and the ability to scale up and down at will, are well known. There are a couple of significant challenges that hae to be born in mind, though.
First, the cloud was primarily invented for IT applications like airlines, banks or insurance companies, where the user sees a form on a screen and fills in a couple of details. hen you check in for your flight the person behind the desk has no need to know anything about the underlying technology.

But a video editor has spent many years deeloping skills using a specific post platform. Their creativity as well as their productivity depends upon this deep, intimate relationship with the application; the continuing success of those vendors depends upon continuing to meet the creative requirements of their users.

To work in the cloud, those vendors now have to redesign and recode their software applications to work with cloud-based media assets. hat is a significant inestment for something that – if they do it right – will be completely invisible to users.
Invisibility is also the key to the second
big roadblock. The cloud is an IT-centric beast, and it has to be managed. Someone has to take on the cloud infrastructure stuff, moving content between storage tiers, and spinning up microservices and workspaces. The goal is that the creative user logs on, sees familiar software and the content relevant to the project, and gets on with the job. Today, we are just at the beginning of a transition that will realise the goals set out by MovieLabs. And, with everything stored and managed in the cloud, could it be the end of the (on-premises) storage industry? 7.B25
