18 ENGINEERING A BETTER WORLD
Falling SVOD subscriptions, the move to IP and the slow uptake of 8K are just some of the challenges facing the broadcast industry, and the IET is making sure its members are kept informed about all this and more, says David Short
On a mission to ‘engineer a better world’, the IET is a global, multidisciplinary membership institution and registered charity. As part of the IET, the Media Technical Network focuses on supporting professionals working in a variety of media professions, such as broadcast and audio engineering.

Chair, comments: “The IET’s remit covers electrical, electronic and systems engineering. This is clearly much wider than the broadcasting industry, but broadcasting has a special place at the IET, both as IBC Partners and as the current occupants of Savoy Place, which was home to the BBC’s early transmissions before its move to Broadcasting House.” Through its corporate partners programme, the IET has helped some of the most innovative companies in the UK with graduate recruitment, professional registration support, training and much more. “The Media Technical Network, which I chair,
organises free and low cost in-person and online events as well as publishing content of interest to engineers and technologists in the industry,” he continues. “Most recently we held a conference on sustainability in media. In previous years we covered topics such as user privacy, cybersecurity, and 150 years of media technology (in 2021, the IET’s 150th year). Much of this material is still available on our YouTube channel.”
Short pinpoints several trends rising in the sector this year. He says: “SVOD subscriptions are plateauing and even falling. The trend towards IP delivery continues, although it will take a long time to dominate over broadcast distribution. Also, 8K is stalling and 4K is not as quick to deploy as was believed outside of SVOD services. It’s not clear what the next big thing in TV technology will be to drive the industry forward.”
JOHN LOGIE BAIRD LECTURES AT IBC o fi nd out what trends the expects to see coming in 2023, Short says: “You should really come to our John Logie Baird Lecture sessions at IBC, as this is a focus of those. “My own view is that we will see more consolidation as the economy contracts, considering we are just at the point of peak penetration. A talisman is Netfl ix dabbling with ads. I would like to say that

the industry is also becoming more aware of its environmental responsibilities. My hope is that it will turn out to be more than greenwashing!” The IET’s John Logie Baird Lectures are hitting for the fi rst time this year. hey will run in Room E102, beginning with The State of the TV Business and the Next Five Years at 11:00-11:45 today. This will be followed on Sunday 11 September by The State of Video Technology and the Next Five Years (12:30- 13:15); and The State of Audio Technology and the Next Five Years (13:30-14:15). Notes Short: “These sessions have leading industry experts presenting and discussing on the state of the industry and looking into the foreseeable future to pick out trends and put forth their views on what is there to watch.”
organisation our portfolio of 25 technical networks will be looking at the opportunity to cross-pollinate and share best practice across a variety of industries to really drive innovation at the grass root level, and start the ourney to fi nd solutions to the societal challenges outlined in our Strategy 2030, especially around sustainability, digital futures and healthy lives.” pecifi cally for the edia echnical Network, we have recruited some great new members to our committee and, now the pandemic is largely behind us, we are looking forward to a programme of focused events to follow up on our IBC programme,” he concludes. “We are still working on the details, but I hope they will be relevant and interesting for everyone in the broadcast and media technology area.”
