20 SECURING THE FUTURE

As an industry so dependent on creativity, bringing people together and fi nding ways to widen participation and ensure accessibility for all are key, as Teresa Wise explains

As an educational charity, the Royal Television Society (RTS) focuses on promoting the art and science of television. It delivers on these objectives in a number of tangible ways, including by offering educational events, careers fairs, awards and more. With 15 regional and national centres, the society supports activity across the UK. It also fi elds debate on issues in the industry at the highest level throughout the year and during its annual autumn conventions held alternately in Cambridge and London. This year, the newly merged Warner

Bros. Discovery is chairing the RTS London Convention on 27 September, with a speaker line-up that includes industry heavyweights Gerhard Zeiler, Priya Dogra, Tim Davie, Carolyn McCall, Alex Mahon, Michael Grade, Maria Kyriacou and Ben McOwen Wilson. Theresa Wise, CEO at the RTS, notes: “This and our many other events provide the industry with an understanding about the latest trends and issues – political, regulatory, strategic and technology – in television and provide Q&As and open discussions around them.” “Another key priority for the RTS is supporting low-income students who are interested in entering the industry, with fi nancial help and mentoring through our established bursary schemes,” Wise continues. he  fi rst launched the schemes in 2014 and since then has helped over 250 young people, with the objective of widening participation and creating more accessible routes into the industry.”

UNCOVERING TALENT Through the RTS Futures Events and supporting material, the society also helps young talent to enter and thrive in the television industry. The RTS Annual Careers Fair is the biggest opportunity for the industry to meet and recruit the next generation of talent. This support for emerging talent continues in the form of the annual RTS Young Technologist of the Year award. This prestigious accolade recognises an outstanding engineer or technologist in the early stages of their career, highlighting the talent of those with a future in broadcast or its related industries, with the RTS arranging for the winner or winners to attend IBC.

industry dependent on creativity”, notes Wise. She goes on: “The RTS has also learnt from Covid and we now offer a strong virtual programme of events and educational on- demand material that we hope further extends our reach and invites anyone with an interest in television to learn more and be part of the conversation.” Wise comments on the challenges and

trends she has noted in the past 12 months. “The increase in demand for TV production

has continued this year, however this has also contributed to the ongoing challenge of a continued skills shortage in crucial roles, and productions struggling to crew up to meet this production demand.

FINANCIAL UNCERTAINTY

“This year we have also seen the challenges for public service broadcasters in securing their future roles and funding, and the ongoing shifts in the media landscape with the increasing consolidation of the major media players.

“Looking at the next six to 12 months, the cost of infl ation we hae seen is likely to challenge the margins of many players in the industry,” she concludes.
