CHAPTER 37 – ECONOMIC POLICY LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
In December 2013, Ireland successfully exited the bailout programme and the Irish economy began to show signs of recovery.
Following a period of recession, a government usually puts a policy in place to encourage economic growth. The government wants the Irish economy to grow for the following reasons:
• More jobs will be created and unemployment will be reduced. • Extra taxes will be collected, which can be invested in the economy.
• Social welfare commitments of the government are reduced and this money can be used elsewhere in the economy.
• Exports will increase, which will bring revenue into the country. • Emigration will be reduced and our young people will be more likely to find work here.
