CHAPTER 16 – BUSINESS AND TECHNOLOGY Technology and the consumer A
Go to page 107 of your Activities and Accounts Book to record all the ways you interacted with an organisation using technology in one week.
Transportation Technology
The fast and efficient transport of goods can open up new markets to a business. For example:
• Improved air, road, rail and sea infrastructures make it easier and faster to deliver goods around the world.
• Ports and warehouses use computer software to move products in and out of their facilities more effectively.
• Goods are often kept more safely (e.g. refrigerated vans stop food from spoiling). • It is much easier to track products on their journey.
BENEFITS OF TECHNOLOGY IN BUSINESS
Advances in technology have been hugely beneficial for business. Technology has:
• Improved communications within and between organisations. • Made accounting more accurate and financial transactions more secure. • Allowed organisations to connect with and understand their target markets.
• Created more flexibility, as location is less important. For example, employees can work from home and still be connected (teleworking).
• Sped up the design and manufacture of goods allowing mass production to take place. Businesses can get large amounts of their products to market quickly.
i
Mass production is the continuous production of a standard product for the global market.
