Benefits of Volunteerism • Learning new skills. • The opportunity to have different experiences. • The satisfaction of helping others. • Playing an active role in the community.
Example
Carla volunteers at a mental health charity, answering calls from people who need help or advice. The charity provided her with the necessary training to do this work. Carla has two shifts a week at the charity, which she does in the evenings after her paid workday has ended. Although it is sometimes challenging, Carla finds volunteering very rewarding.
Volunteering opportunities
In pairs, use the Opportunity Search on the Volunteer Ireland website (volunteering.force.com) to research a volunteering opportunity in your area that supports one of the following causes:
• Homelessness/housing • Animals • Environment and conservation • Human and civil rights/equality.
Prepare a short presentation for the class to explain what the volunteer opportunity involves and what work the organisation advertising it does in the community.
