Impact on the
environment While farming is essential, it can result in damage to the environment.
• Insect sprays used on crops can be harmful and can end up in our food.
• Fertilisers used on the land to increase the fertility of the soil can run off into streams and rivers. This pollutes our water supply.
• The illegal dumping of silage, slurry, and sometimes milk, can lead to rivers becoming polluted. This can result in the killing of fish. Strict laws can help to prevent illegal dumping.
Sustainable agriculture
As a member of the European Union, agriculture in Ireland is strongly influenced by the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The main aims of the CAP are: 1. To provide income support to farmers 2. To ensure guaranteed market prices for farmers in the EU 3. To support rural development programmes 4. To provide Europe with a good supply of quality food.
