Solutions to urbanisation problems Learning Intentions
In this section, you will learn: zz about how people try to counteract the problems of urbanisation.
Solutions to traffic congestion
It has been proven in cities all over the world that building more roads does not solve the problem of traffic congestion. The best way to solve the problem is by encouraging people to use public transport. Buses and QBCs
Buses can carry up to 80 people. If more people used buses it would take many cars off the roads each day. Buses can get to the city centre much quicker than cars because they can use Quality Bus Corridors (QBCs), which are special bus lanes. There has been a big increase in the number of QBCs in Dublin and other urban areas in recent years.

Light rail system
The DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) is an example of a light rail system. The DART line runs along the coast of Dublin Bay, from Howth or Malahide to the north of Dublin, to Greystones in Co. Wicklow. Many people travel to and from work each day on the DART. The DART Expansion Programme aims to develop the service further in the coming years.
Tram system
The Luas is a tram system. This type of public transport is very popular in many European cities. It is a fast and efficient method of transport. There are three Luas lines in Dublin: the Red, Green and Blue line. The Blue line is a new cross-city line that opened in 2017. It connects the Green and Red lines. The Luas service is very important as it links residential areas in the suburbs of Dublin with the city centre.
