Distance, ratio, range and mean Learning the following skills will also help you throughout Second Year. Here is more information on:
zz Distance zz Ratio zz Range zz Mean
Top Tip Distance Distance is the length of space between two points.
(a) Draw these measurements: • 1 mm
• 1 cm
Convert kilometres to miles by multiplying the kilometres by 0.62137.
NUMERACY ACT VITY • 1 inch • 30 cm
(b) Does your teacher have a metre stick? If so, measure your height in metres. You might need to get help from a classmate.
(c) How many kilometres is it from your house to your school? Use Google Maps to find out. (d) Convert the distance from your house to your school from kilometres to miles.
Ratio
A ratio says how much of one thing there is compared to another thing. To work out a ratio, the trick is to always multiply or divide the numbers by the same value.
= 4:1 = 3:1 = 3:2 = 2:1
: Figure 7.14
The ratio of red to blue is 3:1
: Figure 7.15 NUMERACY ACT VITY Can you work out the ratios in Figure 7.15 above? The first one is done for you.
