New Geography in Action Junior Cycle Geography 2. Economies in transition
The economies of these countries are often known as tiger economies. • Industrialisation is occurring rapidly in these countries because of a growth in employment in the secondary sector.
• The focus in these countries is mainly on exporting goods. • Wages are increasing slowly. • Increased wealth has led to an improved standard of living. Countries with economies in transition include Brazil, China and Mexico.

These countries were once referred to as Third World countries. • The economies of these countries are reliant on primary-sector activities such as farming. • They have little or no involvement in secondary and tertiary sectors, and poor infrastructure makes it difficult to attract industry.
• Large numbers of their populations are living in extreme poverty. • These countries tend to be affected by famine, war and high birth rates.
Countries with developing economies are mainly located in the southern hemisphere. Examples include Sudan and Ethiopia.
