2. Exploring how we interact with the physical world: looking at how we interact with the world we live in, how we use the planet Earth to our advantage and the impact this can have.
For example, we will look at how people use soil to grow crops in Chapter 4.
: Figure 1.3 Soil and people: growing crops
3. Exploring people, place and change: looking at the people in the world, the places where they live and the conditions in which they live and why.
For example, we look at how the overexploitation of soil leads to desertification (grassland changing into desert) in Chapter 16.
You can see from the examples on soil above that the three strands overlap.

The skills you learn in Geography class will allow you to understand what’s going on in the world. You will also learn to think about how to solve the different problems you come across.
Take a look at the video lesson below to find out some exciting ways people use Geography in their daily lives.
(a) Which job did you think was the most interesting?
(b) Google Earth is mentioned in the video. Go to Google Earth (https://earth.google.com/web/) and find: (i) your school (ii) your house (iii) a place you would like to visit.
(c) Eric Larsen says, ‘Being an explorer is basically being a geographer’. Discuss this in groups of four.
