Industrial areas
Since the Industrial Revolution, cities have been at the centre of industry. Many goods are manufactured in the factories of cities. Port cities often have industries such as oil refining (Rotterdam) or chemical factories (Cork). This is because the raw materials and finished products for these industries are often transported by sea.

All cities need space for children to play and for people to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Most cities in Ireland have parks and recreational areas within the CBD such as the Mardyke Arena in Cork and the People’s Park in Limerick. There are also many parks in the suburban areas surrounding Irish cities.
