As you may have learned in your History course, the Plantation of Ulster began in 1609 when English and Scottish Protestants settled on land that was taken from the native Irish.
Causes • The British crown wanted to rule the whole island of Ireland and reward its loyal servants by giving them land.
• Britain wanted to spread the Protestant religion to Catholic Ireland and spread English customs.
