New Geography in Action Junior Cycle Geography First-Year skills
Learning more about units of measurement will also help you throughout the year. Here is more information on:
• Percentages • Area • Height
Percentages
( Figure 1.22 Percentages help us to picture numbers
You will be dealing with percentages in First Year. Percentages can help us to picture numbers more easily. To get a percentage, divide the number by the total and multiply by 100. For example 18
30 x 100 is 60 per cent. NUMERACY ACT VITY
(a) If 17 out of 30 students in a class are girls, calculate the percentage of the class who are girls. (b) If 20 per cent of a class of 30 have iPhones, how many students have iPhones?
Area You will also be using area in First Year.
We calculate area using various units of measurement, from square millimetres to square kilometres. We also deal in units of acres and hectares when it comes to farming and forestry. An acre is just over 4,000 m². A hectare is 10,000 m².
To calculate area, we multiply length by width.
For example, an OS map that is 8 grid squares across and 10 grid squares down has an area of 80 km².
NUMERACY ACT VITY
The minimum length of a GAA pitch is 130 m. The minimum width is 80 m. Calculate the minimum area of a GAA pitch.
